These individually formed earthenware pieces are all fired by a unique technique, developed by George Tomkins. It is a combination or raku and sagger firing. Colors are introduced using natural pigments.
The psychological effects are soft, soothing and ethereal.The sagger fired earthenware figures and animals are initially humorous. The figures, however, are inspired by pre-Columbian art. The "Palo Verde Ground Squirrels" are a social commentary on the possible effects of nuclear energy and it's aftermath.
The stretched slab pots and vessels are hand formed with slabs of clay, stood on edge, closed into a cylinder and stretched from the inside to their finished form. The figures and animals are made with slabs and coils.
The round plates feature a thrown clay ring on the back of the piece that allows for easy wall use. They also work great on a table or resting in a plate stand on a shelf or in a niche.
They are unglazed and fired to 1650F degrees, which makes them strictly decorative pieces.
